Flores de Mayo at Manila Ocean Park

UNDERWATER FLORES DE MAYO

In the Philippines, Flores de Mayo (Spanish for Flowers of May) is celebrated for the entire month of May with native customs and celebrations reminiscent of town fiestas of old.

In the underwater realm, there are several sea creatures which resemble flowers with their exceptional beauty. The sea anemone are water-dwelling, predatory animals and closely related to corals and jellyfish. Sea lilies have frond-like tentacles related to starfish and existing for about 480 million years.

The feather duster worm has a “flower” for a head and a crown of worm living in a tube and disappers inside when touched. One of the most pretty and colorful creatures found below the ocean is the Christmas tree worm, closely related to earthworms and leeches. The Xenia soft coral is unique because of its ability to use its “flowers” to push water away from the colony using a constant, pulsing motion.

At Manila Ocean Park, we give you the very first underwater presentation featuring Reyna Esperanza (Queen of Hope), Reyna de las Flores (Queen of the Flowers) and Reyna Emperatriz (Queen Empress) and this is their story:

STORYLINE:

Once upon a time, there were three little girls – mermaid sisters Esperanza, Flores and Emperatriz who loved to stay on the shore to watch the Flores De Mayo festivities on the beach. Their one great dream is to be part of this grand parade of beautiful ladies when they grow up.

As they look out into the ocean with longing, they fervently wished to become queens in the future.

Unknown to them, the secret to grant their wish is already within them. Their deep love for the ocean has given them great powers armed with special items. Esperanza with an anchor as a symbol of hope, Flores with a bouquet of flowers and Emperatriz with a scepter for royalty.

They grew up to be beautiful and radiant queens until such time that they are ready to be maidens of Flores de Mayo. The ocean has blessed them with handsome young men from the kingdom of Maharlika. These sea kings are named Raja, Makisig and Datu.

And so the great celebration began....

Reyna Esperanza holds an anchor as a symbol of hope for the ocean with Sea Prince Raja. The anchor. is seen as a symbol of a well-grounded hope. As the anchor was often a seaman’s last resort in stormy weather, it was frequently connected with hope. Being made of a solid body, the anchor was also identified with firmness, solidity, tranquility and faithfulness. The anchor remains firm and steady amidst the stormy waters, symbolizing the stable part of a human being, that quality which enables us to keep a clear mind amid the confusion of sensation, emotion and the general “storms” of life. Reyna Esperanza’s love to ocean and admiration to Prince Raja is a perfect epitome of anchor.

Reyna de las Flores holds a bouquet of flowers in celebration of the beautiful blooms of May with Sea Prince Makisig. The real value of a flower lies simply in enjoying its natural beauty. Flowers are always a symbol of generosity and love when they are given away.
On the whole, flowers are symbols of deep love, concentration, intelligence, balance, and passion. They are also sometimes seen as a message for healing, revitalization, rejuvenation and courage. Flowers are very complex in their features, and so therefore have complex meanings. Flowers bear the mark of honor, devotion and intense commitment on many levels. Reyna de las Flores offers flowers to show her relentless love to Ocean and her noble admiration to Sea Prince Makisig.

Reyna Emperatriz, the eldest amongst the sisters, holds the scepter as the queen of the sea with Sea King Datu, the guardian of the ocean. A scepter is a symbol of power for royalty, authority and responsibility. She gained the power or authority as she transitioned to be the Queen of the Ocean and carries the right to hold the majestic sea scepter. Its precision engineering and fine craftsmanship are integrated to create a true underwater masterpiece that reflects her love to King Datu – a living testimony of deep love, harmony and respect. Sea King Datu is a very generous, warm-hearted, gracious and loving Merman of Pacific Deep.

And the flower celebration under the sea goes on and on... They lived happily ever after surrounded by wonderful marine creatures.

MOP Flores de Mayo is not only a colorful celebration under water but a gentle reminder to all the woman that there is a queen inside them. They just have to discover and unleash the royal beauty and find for the real man to share their magical world.

As protectors of marine life, they are an inspiration to us all. Manila Ocean Park launches “I Love My Ocean” - a campaign that encourages volunteerism, public education and community mobilization activities designed to increase public awareness and action on coastal management issues and instill pride in our country’s natural resources.

The Ocean Camp

Manila Ocean Park offers various fun activities from dusk until dawn.

Ocean Camp is a sleepover program for students featuring an evening immersion of marine life discovery. Meet Manila Ocean Park's newest stars, Yeni, Vincent, and more!

Manila Ocean Park is now home to the newest and most lovable members of its marine life community, the South American Sea Lions! Marine Life Habitat lets you meet and greet Icis, Ira, Sandra, Isabel, Yeni, and the only male sea lion, Vincent. Watch them display their intelligence and charm in an entertaining live show!

Set amidst a specially designed open walk-through with a multi-level viewing facility, the sea lions are housed in a simulated marine habitat which depicts their natural home of rocky cliffs and beaches. The sea lions don't just wow visitors, they also say something against water pollution and destruction of marine habitats.

Also known as Southern Sea Lions (scientific name Otaria Flavescens), these intelligent marine mammals are usually found along the coasts and offshore islands of South America. Interestingly, the name “sea lion” was derived from the fact that they do not only bark like dogs, but also roar like lions. Sea lions have a life expectancy of 20 years in the wild, and up to 30 years in captivity. Sea lion mothers gestate for 11 months and give birth after 3 days of labor. Males are dark brown in color, have full mane, and grow 2-3 times the size of females. Females are pale brown with some pale markings around their head.

Manila Ocean Park ensures that all marine animals receive proper care and handling. A team of trainers and handlers headed by a veterinarian conducts daily cursory physical exam, daily vitamin administration, weekly weighing, monthly physical examination, and quarterly deworming.
